The Issues

Get Involved › Drivers

We all can play a part in making Maryland roads and highways safe for everyone.

Distracted driving causes one-third of all motor vehicle crashes, and with the rapid developments of technology, accidents caused by distracted drivers are likely to continue to rise.

Changing your behavior while behind the wheel is the best way to get involved in supporting highway safety. You can make the difference. There are simple yet effective steps you can take to be safer on our roads and highways, including:

  • Do not text and drive.
  • Do not read text messages while driving.
  • If you receive a call, pull over to the side of the road to answer the phone.
  • If you need to make a call, pull over to the side of the road.
  • Rather than eat while driving, take 10-15 minutes to eat and drink while parked safely in the parking lot of the restaurant before venturing out onto the road.
  • Stay focused on driving when behind the wheel. Everything else can wait until you’ve come to a complete stop in a safe area on the side of the road.

We encourage you to contact your local legislative representative and get involved in making a difference for your local community and beyond.
